there has been talk these past few days since the throne speech about changing the Canadian National Anthem.
thoughts?
- are you in favour of reevaluating the anthem?

It is a slippery slope. First you change sons to people, then you are changing oh canada to hello canada. Leave it the way it is.

I Agree - stay with what we have.
Ineloquent? Maybe. Disingenuous? Absolutely! Slipped into the speech from the throne to distract and discombobulate what passes for the Canadian press (fairly easy) and the opposition (frighteningly easy) this smacks of political gamesmanship at its most cynical. *sigh*
Hi Tyson. Changing the words to the anthem is nothing but a distraction from what the government should be doing. How about dealing with child poverty in Canada, our environmental policy (or lack thereof more like it), our "new" policy with respect to Israel and the Palestinians (i.e. let Israel do what it wants), or once again a reduction in our foreign aid budget. For heaven's sake, get on with the REAL problems and issues. And once you start changing the words, the anthem can easily be parsed to death. "Sons" has to be changed to "everyone?" Then what about "native" land (does that exclude immigrants/refugees?), we "see" thee rise (does that exclude those with visual problems?), "God" keep our land (should we include some kind of reference to nothing or noone, or possibly no one so as not to exludeatheists/agnostics?) At this rate, we'll soon be standing around singing nothing but the words "O Canada." - Dr. Mark McKim
